Victoria Crowned Pigeon
Currently not available
The Victoria Crowned Pigeon is native to the lowland rainforests of northern New Guinea. Known for its large size and elegant appearance, it is just slightly smaller than the Blue Crowned Pigeon. The bird's most distinctive feature is the elaborate fan of lacy, frilled crest feathers on its head, which resembles a crown—hence its name. Its plumage is primarily soft shades of blue-gray, with a patch of maroon on its chest. The Victoria Crowned Pigeon feeds mainly on fallen fruit, seeds, and small invertebrates. The males have a deep, booming voice to impress the females as they bow during their courtship display. Due to habitat loss and hunting, it is classified as near threatened, and conservation efforts are underway to protect this beautiful species. Fortunately, they have been well-established in American aviculture for many generations. Their impressive size, peaceful nature, and vibrant coloration make them a notable species among New Guinea’s diverse avifauna and a delight to work with in our aviaries.
