Slender-billed Conure

Currently not available

The Slender-billed Conure is a medium sized parrot native to cooler mountainous regions of southern Chile at elevations of up to 7000 feet. It primarily feeds on the seeds of the Araucaria tree, which is similar in appearance to a pine tree. They also consume fruits, seeds and buds of other plants. Its unique, pointed bill is adapted to extract the seeds from the cones of the Araucaria tree and Nothofagus tree. It also allows them to dig in the soil for seeds and tubers. The wild population is still abundant in most parts of its range, but it is very rare in captivity in the US. Its unique appearance and lively nature make it a favorite among the few people who have had the opportunity to keep them.
As with all pet parrots, they require ample space to allow for exercise, play and physical activity in addition to social interaction to thrive. A diet relying mainly on seed mixes is too high in fat in addition to being deficient in vitamins A and D and calcium which will lead to health problems. Appropriate diets for pet parrots may include pellets, sprouts, a variety of fresh produce, and a small amount of seed.
