Silvery-cheeked Hornbill
Currently not available
The Silvery-cheeked Hornbill is found in the wild primarily in east Africa, from Ethiopia down to South Africa. It is known for its large size, curved bill and distinctive facial markings, which include silvery-white feathers on its cheeks that give the bird its name. The casque above the bill of the males is much larger than that of the females. These hornbills inhabit dense forests and woodland areas, where they feed mainly on fruits, insects, and small animals. The silvery-cheeked hornbill is a social bird, often seen in pairs, but in the non-breeding season, they may roost in flocks containing hundreds of birds. They are notable for their loud, braying calls. Silvery-cheeked Hornbills are highly intelligent and can make great ambassador birds in educational shows. Care must always be taken with tame hornbills to avoid the development of aggressive behaviors toward people and other birds that might be perceived as threats.
