Scarlet Macaw

Currently not available

Scarlet Macaws are large, brightly colored parrots native to Central and South America. Known for their striking red, blue, and yellow plumage, these birds are among the most vibrant and recognizable parrots. They typically inhabit rainforests, thriving in the canopy layer where they feed on a diet of fruits, nuts, and seeds. Scarlet macaws are highly social and often travel in pairs or groups, exhibiting loud, raucous calls that can be heard from afar. Scarlet Macaws are also highly skilled at mimicking sounds and speech, making them popular as pets. As a large parrot, their enclosure should be large enough to allow for plenty of activity and stimulation. For many large parrots, it’s often beneficial to have an outdoor aviary large enough for flight and exercise where they can spend at least part of their time.
As with all pet parrots, they require ample space to allow for exercise, play and physical activity in addition to social interaction to thrive. A diet relying mainly on seed mixes is too high in fat in addition to being deficient in vitamins A and D and calcium which will lead to health problems. Appropriate diets for pet parrots may include pellets, sprouts, a variety of fresh produce, and a small amount of seed. The addition of nuts, such as almonds, walnuts and filberts is great for macaws too.
