Red-fronted Macaw
Currently not available
Red-fronted Macaws are beautiful birds native to the dry forests and savannas of central Bolivia. These macaws are slightly smaller than the other common large macaws, such as Blue and Gold Macaws, and feature bright red foreheads, deep blue wings, and lovely golden-green bodies. They are highly social and intelligent, often forming flocks that can consist of dozens of individuals. Red-fronted macaws primarily feed on seeds, nuts, and fruits, playing a vital role in their ecosystem through seed dispersal. Due to habitat loss and poaching, they are classified as critically endangered, and conservation efforts are underway to protect their populations and preserve their natural habitats. Fortunately, Red-fronted Macaws are well established in aviculture in the US, although their inclusion on the Endangered Species Act means that they can only be sold within the state they where they were hatched and raised. No interstate sales are allowed, so our Red-fronted Macaws can only be sold in California.
As with all pet parrots, they require ample space to allow for exercise, play and physical activity in addition to social interaction to thrive. A diet relying mainly on seed mixes is too high in fat in addition to being deficient in vitamins A and D and calcium which will lead to health problems. Appropriate diets for pet parrots may include pellets, sprouts, a variety of fresh produce, and a small amount of seed. The addition of nuts, such as almonds, walnuts and filberts is great for macaws too.
