Red Factor Sun Conure

In the nursery, hand-feeding now!

Sun Conures are vibrant and energetic parrots native to northeastern South America, including countries like Brazil, Suriname, and Guyana. They are renowned for their striking coloration, featuring bright orange and yellow plumage on their head and body, contrasted with green wings and tail feathers. The Red Factor color mutation beautifully enhances the expression of red pigment over the head and down the back of the bird. This mutation shows an “incomplete dominant” expression so that all Red Factor Suns carry one normal copy of the gene and one red factor gene. It is important to note that breeders should never pair up two Red Factor Suns together because about 25% of their offspring will inherit two copies of the red factor gene (double factor) which is lethal causing those offspring to die before maturity. A Red Factor Sun should ONLY be paired with a non-Red Factor (normal) Sun for breeding so that only healthy single-factor and normal offspring can be produced.
Sun conures are highly active and thrive in environments that provide plenty of space to fly and explore. Their loud, cheerful calls make them lively companions, but potential owners should be prepared for their noisy nature and the significant care needs that come with these intelligent, colorful birds.
As with all pet parrots, they require ample space to allow for exercise, play and physical activity in addition to social interaction to thrive. A diet relying mainly on seed mixes is too high in fat in addition to being deficient in vitamins A and D and calcium which will lead to health problems. Appropriate diets for pet parrots may include pellets, sprouts, a variety of fresh produce, and a small amount of seed.
