Laughing Kookaburra
In the nursery, hand-feeding now!
Laughing Kookaburras are iconic birds native to Australia and are renowned for their distinctive call, which sounds like a hearty chuckle. The call was commonly used in old cinematic productions as background sounds for jungle scenes or monkey calls. In the wild, they are more commonly found in dry forest or savannah habitats. They are highly social birds, often seen in family groups, and are commonly found in parks and urban gardens. They belong to the kingfisher family and are the largest species of kingfisher with robust bodies and broad heads with a prominent beak. Kookaburras are carnivorous, feeding on insects, small reptiles, and small mammals. In our aviaries, they are fed frozen/thawed mice, moist cat food and insects such as superworms, crickets, and dubia roaches. Their comical call and calm dispositions make them a favorite among birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, symbolizing the lively and unique wildlife of Australia.
