Helmeted Curassow

2024 and 2025 hatched available

The Helmeted Curassow is a striking gallinaceous bird native to small areas of dense forests of northern South America, particularly in Colombia and Venezuela. Known for its distinctive appearance, it features a prominent casque or helmet-shaped crest on its head, which gives the bird its name. The Helmeted Curassow is a large, ground-dwelling bird with predominantly black plumage, complemented by white markings on its tail and underparts. It plays a vital role in its ecosystem as a seed disperser, feeding primarily on fruits, seeds, and small invertebrates. The declining wild population has recently been changed from Threatened to Endangered due to ongoing habitat loss and hunting. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species in the wild. They are well-established in zoos and private collections in the US which serves as a potential safeguard should the wild population collapse. The Helmeted Curassow's unique appearance, ecological importance and conservation status make it a fascinating subject for bird enthusiasts and biologists alike.
