Greenwing Macaw
Currently not available
Greenwing Macaws, also known as Red and Green Macaws, are vibrant, large parrots known for their striking appearance and social nature. Their coloring is similar to Scarlet Macaws, but Greenwings have delicate feathered lines on their white facial patch that Scarlet Macaws lack, and they have green on their wings where Scarlets have yellow. Greenwings are noticeably larger as well and are one of the largest of all parrots. Native to the Amazon basin of South America, they are highly intelligent and social, often seen in pairs or flocks, and enjoy a variety of fruits, nuts, and seeds as part of their diet. In the wild, they play a crucial role in ecosystems by dispersing seeds and maintaining forest health. Greenwing Macaws are popular in the pet trade, though their size and need for mental stimulation require experienced handling and ample space. Despite their large size and powerful beak, they are generally quite gentle as pets. For many large parrots, it’s often beneficial to have an outdoor aviary large enough for flight and exercise where they can spend at least part of their time. Their striking beauty and complex behaviors make them a favorite among bird enthusiasts and conservationists alike.
As with all pet parrots, they require ample space to allow for exercise, play and physical activity in addition to social interaction to thrive. A diet relying mainly on seed mixes is too high in fat in addition to being deficient in vitamins A and D and calcium which will lead to health problems. Appropriate diets for pet parrots may include pellets, sprouts, a variety of fresh produce, and a small amount of seed. The addition of nuts, such as almonds, walnuts and filberts is great for macaws too.
