Greater Vasa Parrot
In the nursery, hand-feeding now!
Vasa Parrots are native to Madagascar where they are fairly common. In the US, they are becoming increasingly rare. Avian Resources is one of the few places to still breed them, offering an unusual opportunity to acquire one. Vasas are notable for their distinctive charcoal gray appearance, and very strange biology. To learn more about this, please read the article about Vasa Parrots in my blog section of this website. As pets, Vasa Parrots are highly intelligent, energetic, and social birds, often forming strong bonds with their owners. They are known for their playful nature and ability to mimic sounds, especially whistling sounds. Due to their intelligence and high activity level, Vasa parrots require mental stimulation and companionship to thrive in captivity.
As with all pet parrots, they require ample space to allow for exercise, play and physical activity in addition to social interaction to thrive. A diet relying mainly on seed mixes is deficient in vitamins A and D and calcium which will lead to health problems. Appropriate diets for pet parrots may include pellets, sprouts, a variety of fresh produce, and a small amount of seed.
