Dusky-headed Conure
In the nursery, hand-feeding now!
Dusky-headed Conures are wonderful, small-sized parrots native to South America, particularly found in countries like Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. They are easily recognizable by their unique coloration: their heads are dusky gray, contrasting with bright green feathers on their wings and bodies, with accents of blue on their wings and tails, and they have a bright white eye-ring that will sometimes blush when excited. These social birds are often seen in flocks, foraging in the wild for fruits, seeds, and berries. Dusky-headed conures are popular in the pet trade due to their calm but playful and affectionate nature. Duskies can be vocal at times, but they are less boisterous than their cousins, the Sun and Jenday Conures. They are a lively addition to any bird enthusiast's collection.
As with all pet parrots, they require ample space to allow for exercise, play and physical activity in addition to social interaction to thrive. A diet relying mainly on seed mixes is too high in fat in addition to being deficient in vitamins A and D and calcium which will lead to health problems. Appropriate diets for pet parrots may include pellets, sprouts, a variety of fresh produce, and a small amount of seed.
