Crimson-bellied Conure
In the nursery, hand-feeding now!
The Crimson-bellied Conure is a small parrot species native to the forests and woodlands of Brazil and Bolivia where its wild population is still doing well. The Crimson-bellied conure features a distinctive red patch on its belly and chest, a lovely scalloped pattern to its upper chest and neck and blue accents to its green plumage above. These conures are social birds, often seen in small flocks, and are known for their playful and lively behavior. They primarily feed on seeds, fruits, and berries, and they thrive in their natural habitat, where they play a vital role in seed dispersal. As pets, they are active, playful, curious, and social birds that enjoy interaction and mental stimulation. They tend to form strong bonds with their owners. As members of the conure genus Pyrrhura, they do have quieter voices than their larger conure cousins.
As with all pet parrots, they require ample space to allow for exercise, play and physical activity in addition to social interaction to thrive. A diet relying mainly on seed mixes is too high in fat in addition to being deficient in vitamins A and D and calcium which will lead to health problems. Appropriate diets for pet parrots may include pellets, sprouts, a variety of fresh produce, and a small amount of seed.
