Citron-crested Cockatoo

Currently not available

The Citron-crested Cockatoo is known for its vibrant orange-yellow crest and predominantly white plumage as well as its smaller size for a cockatoo. Native to Indonesia’s Lesser Sunda Islands, specifically the island of Sumba, these birds are highly intelligent and social, often residing in flocks but are also facing significant threats from habitat loss and poaching. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their population in the wild, which is classified as Critically Endangered due to their limited island range and the pressures of habitat loss as their forest homes are converted to agriculture, especially oil palm plantations. They are prized in the pet trade for their striking appearance and playful nature. It is important to note that wild parrots have not been imported to the US since 1992, and the Citron-crested Cockatoos in this country were imported before then when their wild population was much more numerous. The captive population may end up serving as a safeguard against extinction if the wild population crashes from continuing pressures.
As with all pet parrots, they require ample space to allow for exercise, play and physical activity in addition to social interaction to thrive. A diet relying mainly on seed mixes is too high in fat in addition to being deficient in vitamins A and D and calcium which will lead to health problems. Appropriate diets for pet parrots may include pellets, sprouts, a variety of fresh produce, and a small amount of seed.
