Blue Crowned Pigeon
Currently not available
The Blue-crowned pigeon is native to the lowland forests of northwestern New Guinea. It is renowned for its majestic crown on its head and large size. It is the largest of all wild pigeon species. It also features maroon wing patches which contrast beautifully with its soft gray-blue body. They prefer dense forests and are often seen feeding on fruits, seeds, and other plant materials. The males have a deep, booming voice to impress the females as they bow during their courtship display. Due to habitat loss and hunting, the blue-crowned pigeon is considered vulnerable, and conservation efforts are important to ensure its survival in the wild. Fortunately, they have been well-established in American aviculture for many generations. Their impressive size, peaceful nature, and vibrant coloration make them a notable species among New Guinea’s diverse avifauna and a delight to work with in our aviaries.
