Illiger's Macaw
Currently not available
The Illiger’s Macaw, also known as the Blue-winged Macaw, is native to South America in the countries of Brazil, and Paraguay. They were experiencing population declines in the wild in the southern portion of their range due to habitat loss and being persecuted by farmers as potential crop pests. They have shown some recovery in numbers in this area more recently. They have remained numerous in the bulk of their range in Brazil. Considerably larger than Hahn’s Macaws but also very much smaller than Blue and Gold Macaws, Illigers are definitely a “mini-macaw”, which means that they pack a lot of macaw characteristics into a smaller package. That includes a powerful voice with a playful and social personality.
As with all pet parrots, they require ample space to allow for exercise, play and physical activity in addition to social interaction to thrive. A diet relying mainly on seed mixes is too high in fat in addition to being deficient in vitamins A and D and calcium which will lead to health problems. Appropriate diets for pet parrots may include pellets, sprouts, a variety of fresh produce, and a small amount of seed.
