Hahn's Macaw

Currently not available

The Hahn's Macaw, or Red-shouldered Macaw, is native to the tropical lowlands of Brazil and Bolivia where they are still common in the wild. It is the smallest of the macaw species nearly identical in size to a Blue-crowned Conure. Despite their small size, they can be fairly loud but do not sound off as often as many of the conure cousins. They are fairly good mimics and will learn to imitate speech and other sounds that they find interesting. Hahn’s Macaws are quite cuddly as pets and will seek close contact with their owners.
As with all pet parrots, they require ample space to allow for exercise, play and physical activity in addition to social interaction to thrive. A diet relying mainly on seed mixes is too high in fat in addition to being deficient in vitamins A and D and calcium which will lead to health problems. Appropriate diets for pet parrots may include pellets, sprouts, a variety of fresh produce, and a small amount of seed.
